This artwork is inspirited by the book Einstein’s Dream, from 19 April 1905, which narrates a poetic fiction about time having three dimensions, like three chains of events that happen simultaneously. The part that I am fascinated by is that the author concludes the book with an open ending about different attitudes of people when they are faced with an unknown future. It mentions that some people make light of decisions, arguing that the future is impossible to predicted and that others hold onto the belief that each decision should be carefully considered. This stimulated me to think about what time means to me.

I consider time to be an invisible and necessary metric established by human beings. We use it to confess and conceal, and regulate ourselves. Even though we don’t know if time is really passinglike sand through an hourglass or if it even exists in the world, we still follow it as a doctrine. After all, the only thing we know for certain is our past decisions and present results.

Therefore, for this painting I want to talk about time, the time lapse of our lives. I use small globs of colors as multiple decisions and variables.  Every time I paint one color next to another, I will reconsider it to match the surrounding globs. This process of repeatedly applying paint is a metaphor for a decision that I make in my life which I cannot insure will be perfect for the future, but is the best choice that I can make right now. It is a limitation  of being human.

Gateway

2016 / Gouache on wood 18 x 12 inch

Gate series present a feeling of delusion, which involves distrust, defense, and desire in human society today. I play with optical illusion to switch the long-range prospective idea of space. Generally, I use flat images that I painted and texture from panel, such as wood, to create a coherent feeling of physical obstruction and mental distance. Since there is no subject-object in my painting, the viewers’ attention will focus on the atmosphere and narrative.

Malady

2016 / gouache on wood cube 10 x 10 x 10 inch

This is a cube installation that stands on one of its corners, which in the center of a round mirror. Viewers can see straightway the top of three dark navy surfaces. The mirror reflects three sides of the cube, which are painted with figures (in) horror vacui, the mirror make the painting looks like a spread out of image. It is a figures painting portraying infantile female puppets with dull faces and ghost horns. Although their body overlapping with each other, their see sight and facial expression convey a disconnected relationship. Their bodies tangle in an irrational way which presents an association of entangled mind to them.
